Dear Dr. Suzy,   

Q. I've been hearing alot about holistic health and holistic pain relief solutions lately.  What exactly does that mean?

A. Put simply, the word holistic refers to seeing things as whole, complete systems rather than as isolated, individual parts.  For example, Holistic healthcare attempts to treat both the mind and the body.  Holistic ecology views humans and the environment as a single system.  Holistic pain relief involves looking at your body and your mind and spirit as interrelated and interconnected.  Traditional pain relief solutions often involve treating one isolated part without considering how the other systems of the body may be affected or contributing to the cause of the pain.

For many individuals, it sometimes seems that a big part of their lives is spent looking for ways to relieve pain caused by inflammation, injury, arthritis, joint problems, and other biomechanical causes.  Chronic pain can be just as disabling as acute pain because it wears the individual’s body and mind down over time and drains one’s energy levels, making simple, everyday tasks seem like insurmountable challenges.

Finding the cause of your pain usually takes a great deal of research and experimentation.  Knowledge truly is power, however, and sometimes, just one simple concept can make a tremendous difference in the level of suffering that a person goes through daily.  Fortunately, there are many holistic solutions for pain management and pain relief available today in addition to traditional medical treatment.
